Precious Pepala: An 18-Year-Old Sensation Taking the Music World by Storm

 


Precious Pepala is one of the most exciting up-and-coming talents out of the U.K. and I had the chance to sit down and interview her recently. It's rare to come across young artists who are not only talented but possess the self-awareness and sensibility that she does. At just 17 years old, Precious Pepala is making a truly impressive debut with her first releases, including the song "My Eyes Only," which has captured the hearts of over 2.3 million listeners.


"Well, it's actually a weird coincidence because today, it's been a year since I decided to drop out of school to pursue music properly. It's very full circle to be talking about it," Precious shares. This bold move to leave school at 17 and dedicate herself to music has paid off, with her gaining recognition as a remarkable artist with immense potential.


Precious Pepala's journey into the world of music is a unique one. Born in Sheffield, England, she hails from a Zambian background, and her cultural influences have played a significant role in shaping her identity. "I don't have a Yorkshire accent even though I'm from South Yorkshire, so it had a lot of heavy influence in how I am now and how I approach certain things. Coming from that culture, it helped form the person I am today at 17," she says in an interview with Nylon in December of 2022.


One of the key values instilled in her by her cultural background is the importance of respect. "I don't like to surround myself with people who don't respect me if I respect them," Precious emphasizes. This deep sense of respect has influenced her approach to music and her interactions with others.


Growing up in a religious family with her father as a pastor, Precious was exposed to the world of gospel music from a young age. Her early experiences singing in church and being encouraged by her father to pursue her passion for music have shaped her unique vocal style and lyrical choices. These influences from her gospel background and the songs she used to listen to as a child have played a significant role in her musical journey.


Precious Pepala's music journey took an unexpected turn when she posted covers on TikTok. Her cover of Alec Benjamin's "Water Fountain" went viral, reaching over 2.3 million viewers. This platform allowed her to showcase her talents and connect with a growing audience.


However, it was her decision to leave school and pursue music full-time that marked a turning point in her career. "It was hard in the sense that I was very nervous to go to my parents about it because, as much as they were supportive, it's not a typical thing for your kid not to attend Uni, let alone not go to school at 16," Precious reflects. The journey over the past year has been both exciting and challenging, but she is grateful for the support and guidance from her manager, Jordan.


"I really want to release an album one day. I really want to do a show that's my own show where people come to see me and it's our own experience together. People seeing me and me seeing them for the first time. That's going to be something that I'm really looking forward to," Precious shares her aspirations for the future.


With the recent release of her EP and single "Eve," Precious Pepala continues to captivate her audience with her profound lyrics and captivating vocals. "Eve" explores themes of temptation, desire, and inner conflict, drawing listeners into an emotional and thought-provoking musical experience.
