The Drill Wave and Kenzo B's Take:

In a recent conversation during Complex's Volume NY women rapper roundtable, Kenzo shared her perspective on the New York drill wave. According to her, the drill sound has become a gateway for individuals who might not be adept at traditional rap but still want to make their mark. "I feel like everybody's tapping in with the drill wave because, number one… I feel like I can speak for everybody, but correct me if I'm wrong," Kenzo explained. "We all know that was a way to get lit. Like that's the easiest way because people who really can't rap for real are getting lit with a drill [beat]."

Kenzo's insights shed light on the accessibility of the drill genre, providing an avenue for a diverse range of artists to find success within the scene. In a landscape where authenticity often takes center stage, Kenzo B stands out as a true wordsmith with a genuine passion for the craft.

Kenzo B: The Early Years and Rise to Fame:

Born Te'arah Gaines on March 4, 2004, Kenzo B's journey into the world of hip-hop began at a young age. Raised in the south Bronx, she honed her skills in the lively battle rap arena—her family's living room. Encouraged by her brothers, Kenzo embraced the competitive spirit of freestyling, a skill that would later define her unique approach to rap.

At just 13, Kenzo, along with her siblings, ventured into professional music, uploading their first music video on YouTube. While the initial views might not have been astronomical, it marked the beginning of a promising musical journey. Fast forward to 2021, and Kenzo gained major recognition with her breakout single, "Bump It," showcasing her distinctive style and fearless lyricism.

Kenzo B's Musical Prowess:

Kenzo's music seamlessly blends elements of trap, boom-bap, and gangster rap, establishing her as a standout figure in the Bronx drill scene. Her tracks, including "Bump It," "Make It Lit," and "The Facts," have collectively garnered over 7 million views on her official YouTube channel, catapulting her into the spotlight.

Her authentic approach to rap, marked by throaty, brolic, and quick-witted bars, sets her apart from her peers. Notably, Kenzo's 2022 breakout "Bump It" incorporated a sample from a 1962 surf rock anthem, showcasing her ability to infuse unexpected elements into her music.

Navigating the Industry:

Kenzo's rapid ascent in the industry led to a deal with Warner Records through French Montana's Coke Boys imprint. Despite her relatively short time in the spotlight, she's been prolific, releasing the critically acclaimed Top Dawg EP and making impactful guest appearances on projects like DJ Drama and French Montana's Coke Boys 6.

As she navigates the major-label landscape, Kenzo remains focused on growth and learning. Her dedication to the craft is evident as she continues to evolve her sound and experiment with new storytelling elements in her music.
